I have far too much good in my life to be unhappy. In the three-and-a-half years since my wife and I have been married, a lot has been accomplished. I just have a hard time justifying a blog post that gives you updates when really what we are living is the same experience we were living the last time I posted.

Brittan and I continue loving each other (I know - good news, right?) more than anything in the world. I continue to work on my Master's degree, two classes at a time - basically, this means that there will be some actual news sometime before the end of 2010. I still love my job (Project Engineer over Transmission Line designs in case you didn't know) and the career opportunities that it lays down before me. Brittan is still a personal trainer - and a great one at that. I think our relationship has even gotten to the point where she might be able to train me.

Now back to the bit about the frustration of not having much to say about my life as it currently stands. I was really struck by the things I wish were different this Christmas, when I realized that the biggest news I had was a new LCD TV and a Blu-Ray player. I was really honestly excited about it (still am, actually). That bugs me to no end. By no fault of their own, many of my friends and co-workers have been, or soon will be, blessed with children in their respective families. To them, excitement is seeing the smiles on their children's faces on Christmas morning. I don't have that. WE don't have that.

This is a particularly difficult subject to discuss, you understand, because there are no words that anybody can say (particularly those who have children) that will make a person in my shoes feel better. Yes, I know we're still young. Yes, I know you have a friend that took eight years to have her first. Honestly? Do you think telling me to wait five more years is comforting? Especially for my wife, this is a very emotional subject. The sadness is always there, just under the surface, bubbling its way up. There have been good days and bad days, and hundreds of dollars in pregnancy tests.

I am not saying that we have no hope. Rather, what we have is a lack of patience. We live in Utah. Around here, even the people who aren't trying typically have a baby by their third year of marriage. Is it any wonder that our expectations have been skewed? I have to ask myself every Sunday if I really want to go to church and see all of the new babies that everybody else seems to be having. Brittan loathes church because of them.

The elephant in the room is the What is wrong with me? or the Where am I lacking? People like to tell you that if you keep doing the right things, you will be blessed - but that isn't always true. Sometimes the blessing never comes in this life. I happen to know that I don't have patience for that possibility. So, we are back to hope. Hope is what we cling to from day to day that ensures that we will not give up.

If there is one thing I have already learned from this experience, it is that I know that I will never give up on our posterity, even if they are testing my patience before they are conceived...Damn kids...

Some Pictures of Our "New" Car...

Yes, Brittan and I got a new car just a few weeks ago, and we are really enjoying it quite a bit. the video itself reminds me of the Intel chips that my uncle makes:

Finally, another love song by another great artist - I've just been spending so much time in the real world lately that it has been difficult for me to get back to the blogosphere. In short - my excuse is that of one busy guy!

For the past 5 months, I have been going to school for my Master's at the University of Utah - while working full-time at an engineering firm near our home in Bountiful. Well, to make a long story short, these things have kept me busy, but I have managed to perform well in both of them. My grades are back from my first semester of graduate studies - A's all around - and I just got a promotion at work to be a Project Engineer. This means I get to be the client's first point of contact once I start getting assigned projects to be responsible for. It's very exciting, and also a little bit nerve-wracking. At any rate, I am excited for the possibility the future holds for Brittan and myself.

I'm going to have to cut this one short, but thank you for your time.

My Husband

I just read our blog and all I have to say is I love my husband. term='Facebook'/>
My First 7 Days of Facebook...

First of all, I have to apologize for not posting any pictures or videos from our vacation yet. I will be doing so shortly. I had some very grand schemes in mind to produce an amazing video using some software that we got with Brittan's new computer, but as it turns out, there isn't nearly enough time available in the real world to do everything you want to. I'll probably just post one of my favorite videos and then a slew of pictures and call it good for now.

Anyways, on to my real point for this post...

While Brittan and I were in Florida, we visited with one of Brittan's long-lost cousins (I probably haven't met 90% of her extended family) who lives there. Brittan asked for contact information, and her cousin told us about facebook.

Mind you, I had heard of facebook before, and I had immediately lumped it together with all of those other social networking sites out there. I have received invitations to join at least three or four of those social networking sites in my e-mail before, but I never found any of them to be effective enough to be worthwhile. Specifically, I had a hard time justifying the effort it took for me to connect with people I knew, generally because the people I wanted to connect with weren't using that particular network. In fact, it was my general dissatisfaction with my previous experiences in social networking websites that led me to start this blog.

Needless to say, I was fairly skeptical about the idea of using facebook to get in touch with people. Less than a week after returning home, however, I gave it a try. I don't know if I did it more because of Brittan's cousin suggesting it or if I did it more out of curiosity from all of the coverage facebook has received in the media lately. Either way, you get the same result. I dove into something that I never thought I would do.

I signed on for the first time on March 5 at 10:30 AM. Brittan had created her profile the previous day, and insisted that I have my own, rather than sharing. I was immediately impressed by how easy it was to find people I knew on this network. This was obviously something different from my previous social networking experiences. I was also very impressed by the varying levels of access control provided by the site. Although the steady stream of e-mails arriving in my Hotmail inbox was somewhat irritating at first, I quickly found the controls to change that, as well.

Within a week, I have managed to find nearly 140 friends, past and present. Best of all, it was surprisingly easy. Even better - I get the feeling that the site has a lot more to offer that I haven't even begun to explore.

I know this has been sounding somewhat like a sales pitch, but I assure you that it isn't all good news between facebook and myself. I am still not quite satisfied with the communication tools available. When it comes to making general observations about life, I prefer to use our blog, simply because it seems more accessible. Anything posted on facebook quickly becomes buried by all of the continual activity surrounding it. The blog is more stationary, much easier to control.

Ideally, I would like to use facebook to help people visit our blog more frequently. I have already posted links between the two, and I'm hoping that I can figure out the best way to handle my online presence. I love the idea of being able to communicate with people that I know, love and respect, even if we are separated by thousands of miles and nearly a decade of experiences. It has been a lot of fun so far. And even though blogs and facebook conversations will never replace being with these people in person, I prefer having a meager online relationship to having no contact whatsoever. I'm sure that Brittan feels the same way.

Greetings from Orlando, Florida!

So, yeah, just wanted to let everybody know what Brittan and I have been up to recently. The most notable event is that I HAD to come down to Florida for a work-related training conference - so I brought Brittan with me. We came down a couple of days early and went to Disney World. The picture below is just a very small sampling of what is to come.

We'll be getting back home tomorrow and I'll have to see about getting some videos and more pictures scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Terrible Towel'/>

Has anyone seen my terrible towel?

In December of 1975, Myron Cope, the radio announcer for the Pittsburgh Steelers, introduced to the world an item that would become one of the most infamous (or famous, depending on which side of the fence you are on) symbols in all of sports. That item is, of course, the world's first "rally towel," The Terrible Towel.

I think it should be noted here that this is far more than just another meaningless sports gimmick. Did you know that Myron Cope had an autistic son? Well, he did, and so when the terrible towel took off in popularity after the Steelers won a Super Bowl later that season, he determined that he would use that popularity to benefit a cause close to his heart. Since very early in its existence, part of the proceeds from every officially-licensed terrible towel sold go to the Allegheny Valley School, which provides care and education for over 900 people with mental or physical disabilities. This continues even after the death of Myron Cope, who died on February 27th of last year (2008). So, supporting the Steelers also supports a very good cause.

Now for my dilemma - I want a terrible towel. I have been to several sports stores in the area and they are all out. Go figure - the Steelers win a Super Bowl, and everybody wants to buy another terrible towel for their collection. They aren't that expensive, at about $7-$8 each. Now, for me, it's just a matter of locating one. I would order one online, but I have a couple of problems with that: 1) It takes the fun out of finding one in person; and 2) Rumor has it that the internet is out of them, too.

If any of you out there have a chance as you are passing by a local sports-gear store to take a look, and you happen to see one of these precious treasures, please let me know immediately - I will make it worth your while...Well, maybe I should check with Brittan first... type='text'>So full..Ugh! Or, Counting Myself Lucky.

For those of you who do not know, my dear sweet wife is an amazing cook. Besides a couple of minor lapses of judgment when we were engaged involving the 5-second rule and food that ended up on my plate, she has proven to me that she can prepare and serve a mean meal.

Lately, that has become ever so much more apparent. Ever since she quit working and went back to school full-time (something she hasn't done since high school), she has been trying to fill her time with productive activities. This last couple of weeks she has decided to make cooking her new hobby. I say cooking, but I really mean "everything that can possibly be done in the kitchen," including baking, broiling, etc.

Of course, my initial impression was the same as that of any other husband who ever finds himself so lucky as to be present during his wife's development into a domestic goddess: I was very happy. It all began with her searching for "yummy" recipes online, then it snowballed into the purchase of five more cook-books (including one that apparently had sentimental value), along with the ingredients to make enough food to feed the two of us for approximately 2 months with just the desserts alone.

As you can see from the diagram above, "Fats, Oils & Sweets" are in the smallest part of the food pyramid. They are also the principal ingredients in any dessert with any detectable level of tastiness. And even though the argument could be made that cookies contain grains, which are in the biggest part of the food group, let's face it - desserts are not a health food. Unfortunately. I have also found out that too many desserts at once are not so good for the digestive system...Oh well, I won't be making that mistake again (who are we kidding, of course I will).

The most impressive thing about this is that Brittan has never, in the two-and-a-half years we have been married, been on a cooking spree like this before. I emphasize the "like this," because she has, as I mentioned before, always been an excellent cook and has made some of the most delectable food creations to ever grace my tongue. But before, we always had time to finish the leftovers from the previous creation well before the next one was made. This time, she has too many ideas she wants to try to give me time to finish the leftovers. Appetizers, entrees, desserts - you name it, we have plenty of them, or the ingredients to make some more, or both.

So, this leads me to the big question: is there anybody that needs dinner plans? We've got plenty to go around!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://vernon-brittan.blogspot.com/2009/02/so-fullugh-or-counting-myself-lucky.html' title='So full..Ugh! into the University of Utah. It has only taken twice as long for me to find out as they told me it would. Also, even though my academic advisor in the College of Engineering at the U has told me I have been admitted, the admissions office still has not "fully processed" my admissions, so I can't access any of the websites in order to add classes, apply for financial aid (if necessary) or do anything else...So yeah...

I guess that waiting for things to process may be one of those things that I have to get used to now that I am going to a much bigger school. I put together some quick artwork to express my feelings at this very moment:

<a onblur="try type='text'>It's Official...

On December 13, 2008, I walked in the Fall 2008 commencement ceremony at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. Of course, the commencement exercises do not make the graduation official - you don't even have to participate in order to graduate. The ceremony is exactly that - a ceremony. It is a moment of recognition. It is 1.5 hours of sitting in a rather ridiculous cap and gown in order to have a 10-second walk up on to a podium to hear your name called aloud and to receive a rather official-looking diploma cover which does not, in fact, contain a diploma. Where a diploma should be is instead a sheet of paper reminding each and every "graduate" that they haven't officially graduated until they receive an actual diploma in the mail in about 4-6 weeks.

Now that I think about it, the whole graduation ceremony is a rather silly formality. It's more for the people who want to recognize the graduate's achievements than it is for the graduate's wishing to be recognized for those self-same achievements. If most of the graduates are anything like me (which I believe they are), they are probably just happy to finally be done with it all. What makes my attendance even more ridiculous is the fact that I had to drive through the winter's first blizzard in order to arrive just in time to throw a cap and gown on and jump into the sea of graduates on the floor of the arena.

So, regarding the title of this post - my grades are all in now, and not only did I pass all of my classes, but I passed them with flying colors. So, even though I still have not received my diploma in the mail, I know that I will be receiving one. That's always a relief! Now I can start focusing my efforts on the next academic task at hand - getting myself into the University of Utah. I certainly wouldn't want to give myself a break...

ATTENTION MOZILLA USERS!

This is probably just the dork in me that wants the world to know this, but I would like all of you Mozilla Users to know that I have fixed the HTML in our blog so that it now functions properly in Mozilla. I have now accessed our blog in Internet Explorer, Safari, Mozilla and Google Chrome (my browser of choice) without any problems. I know what you're thinking - "Why in the world would you have all of those browsers on your computer?" Well, the truth is even I don't know the answer to that one. The only two internet browsers that I use on a regular basis are Internet Explorer - for Microsoft-specific sites which Microsoft annoyingly limits in any other browser - and Google Chrome - which has, in the few short months I have used, quickly become my favorite internet browser of all time. Google Chrome takes all of the good things from Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari and then takes them to the next level, for a quicker, easier surfing experience....And I'm not even getting paid to say this...Shoot.

Well I guess now I've said enough about internet browsers for you all to think I am a dork. I dare any one of you to estimate the number of things you can't imagine doing without the internet, and then reconsider this thought.

This, my friends, is how I feel sometimes during school. I suppose that I should clarify this by saying that it's not so much the weight of the things that need to be done as it is the balancing act of it all that I find challenging. Between work, school, Brittan and just wanting to have some fun every now and then (yes, I do consider following sports to be fun), it often seems that I don't really have time to breathe. Is that normal? Everyone I've spoken to says that it is, but is it really?

Currently, I am just a few short months away from the end of my undergraduate college career. I am kind of counting down the weeks (12), but I'm trying not to put much effort into it since I don't want that kind of distraction pulling at my coattails right now. Utah State University has been very good to me, and I am proud to say that I will have graduated in exactly 8 semesters. In case you didn't know, this is almost unheard-of among engineering majors these days. I had a good motivator though -- my scholarship runs out at the end of the 8th semester, which just happens to be this semester. All in all, it has been an amazing journey.

The journey continues, however. Once I receive my Bachelor's degree, that is all the more reason to go ahead and get my Master's degree. As I've probably mentioned here before, I am planning on continuing my schooling on a part time basis at the University of Utah. I am not 100% sure about how I feel about that, since I really do love the Civil Engineering program at USU. I guess you could say that I am looking at all of the positives:

1) The U of U is much closer to home;

2) I will be able to work full-time more consistently since I will only be taking two classes per semester;

3) The U offers a classwork-only Master's degree in Civil Engineering, which apparently doesn't exist at USU;

4) The U doesn't require me to take the GRE to get into the program because of my GPA;

5) Not only will I be able to attend home football games on a more frequent basis, but the home team will often win;

6) Do I really need anything more to feel good about this decision?

I guess you could say that my most difficult decision at this point is whether I start up at the U in the Spring of 2009 or the Fall. Brittan insists that I should head straight up to the U in the spring, but the more I think about it, the more I think we would be more financially stable if I waited until the Fall...Tough choices...Either way, I've got my work cut out for me.

<img width='1' height='1' We did a little camping a little biking and so on. Our main trip was going to New York and that was a blast. We did all the touristy things along with some shopping and ate to much of really tasty foods. It was a ton of fun and a nice break from working 24/7. Not to say we don't thoroughly enjoy our jobs immensely it's just nice to get away and not have to worry about deadlines and goals and trying to make everyone happy.We also had a new addition to the family our new nephew Copper who is the cutes little guy in the world.

We love being an aunt and uncle.

Now it's back to school Vernon will graduate this December with his bachelors and will continue in the spring for his masters at the UofU. These have been the happiest and most fulfilling one year, ten months, five days and approximately twelve hours of my entire life, and I believe that Brittan feels the same. In the last one year, ten months, five days and approximately twelve hours, a lot of things have happened -- and yet, not many things have changed. For this reason, it has been a somewhat difficult time for me to convince myself that a blog is worthwhile. In the end, however, I do believe that we owe it to ourselves to try.

I will have to be upfront and honest with all of those who are reading this: I will be doing most of the blogging myself. I will try to involve Brittan as much as I can (mostly to screen what I type so I don't embarrass myself and to screen what pictures I post because you know how women can be), but I can give no guarantees. Out of respect for her, I will simply say that I love her with all of my heart and soul and I am grateful for everything that she does that makes me want to be a better person.

The greatest change to occur in the last one year, ten months, five days and approximately twelve hours actually just happened last week -- Brittan quit her job at a local Chiropractor's office in order to pursue her dreams of working in the fitness industry. She is currently working as personal trainer and a general manager through a locally-based fitness company at a gym just a few blocks away from our apartment. She is also preparing herself to finally return to school after far too long away from her studies. I take the blame for that personally, since she has been working to support me through school for the last one year, ten months, five days and approximately twelve hours. Finally I am making enough money at my job during school to cover most of our bases while she studies. This is a great relief to me since I know how important it is to her to complete her schooling.

I (Vernon) am currently one semester and one month of school away from completing my bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering at Utah State University (Interesting aside here -- yes, I do commute from Bountiful to Logan and back -- all 150 miles of it -- every school day. While that may seem like a lot, the only part that really seems to hurt me is the gas money. I have a $40 fill-up in my Mazda Protege about every other day. Imagine making that commute in a truck, and it is sure to give you the shivers to compute the costs.). This is a very exciting time for me. In just under 8 short months I will be done with the B.S. Of course, then I will just be starting on the M.S. since I can't sell myself short, but I prefer to think of it a step at a time. I'll also be doing the Master's on a part-time basis while working full-time, so it's not quite the same, is it? Currently, I have a great job with an engineering consulting firm very close to our apartment. The pay is great, and they really love me. I have no doubt that they will give me a good offer after I graduate, but we'll just have to wait and see how bad they really want me.

Well, here we are. I think I have properly introduced us to the blogging world. If you disagree, just let me know, and I will be more than happy to attempt to please your more discerning palate. In future posts, I believe I shall attempt to address our interests, hopes and dreams a little bit more. If ever I seem too methodical, just forgive me -- I'm an engineer.

A New Blog is Born...

To Whom It May Concern:

Brittan and Vernon Black do hereby establish a new blog.
